BOOKS THAT HELP KIDS GROW

Christmas is just around the corner and, if your family is a little bit like mine, you may have already been asked for gift ideas for the kids. I always have a few book titles to suggest, since books have the power to last far more than another battery-operated toy… And through these book titles, I always try to have a few that encourage a growth mindset. Here are some of our favorites in this category:

BEAUTIFUL OOPS

Beautiful Oops is all about creativity, but always starts out with a mistake: a smudge, a drop of paint, a stain, bent paper… Barney Saltzberg gets us to think outside the box, but mostly, to have fun with our mistakes. Lots of flaps makes reading this book very interactive.

THE KOALA WHO COULD

Change can be frightening. Kevin the koala sure thinks he is better off in his same old ways, snug and safe. Will he be able to embrace change when it comes around?
A gorgeous book about facing change with courage.

THE BAD SEED

Being bad is all that the bad seed can remember. Bad temper, bad manners, bad everything… But what will happen once he decides that enough is enough? This great book, perfect for young and older children, reminds us of the immense power of will and that a positive change is possible. For everyone.

THE MOST MAGNIFICENT THING

A book about perseverance. Definitely one of my personal favorites. Maybe because my son has trouble with dealing with errors and mistakes. But, mostly, because it shows the process of how to get through, how to take a step back to think AND because it’s main character is female but does a “guy” thing.

“A girl sets out to make the most magnificent thing – it should be easy enough, right? She knows exactly how it will work, all she has to do is make it. But making this most magnificent thing turns out to be anything but easy and she tries and fails repeatedly. Eventually, she gets really mad and decides to quit. But after her dog convinces her to take a walk, the girl comes back to her project with a new perspective and manages to get it just right.”

A must-have book to illustrate how trying again and taking a step back to gain perspective are essential to reach our goals.

Definite must-have!
